TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:
Government will decide on options about how to connect the islands of Sumatra and Java via the Sunda Strait in October.

The three options include a bridge, an under-sea tunnel, and increasing the amount of ferries.

Bambang Susantono, Regional Infrastructure and Development Deputy to the Coordinating Ministry of the Economy, said that government will hold an open discussion on September 3.

This will be attended by construction experts, academics, representatives from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT).

“We will make up our minds by October,” he said after attending a discussion about infrastructure yesterday (31/8).

Bambang denied reports that the government has already decided on the option to connect the two islands where 75 percent of the national economy comes from.

He explained that the construction over the Sunda Strait was not easy as there were many fractures along the strait.

If a bridge were to be built, it would use the north route (Merak – Lampung) or the south route (Anyer-Lampung).

The second option, an under-sea tunnel, would duplicate the Euro Tunnel. As it would be 30 kilometer long, the tunnel should be provided with oxygen supplies and minimize any fire sparks.

“Cars would be transported aboard a train so any fire would not harm the tunnel,” he said.

The third option, which is having more ferries, will be hampered by the strait’s status. The strait cannot have much more traffic as it is Indonesian’s main water route.
